The Wild GAK ("Geo-Aufsatz-Kreisel") is a Gyro Aiming Circle with which a theodolite can be extended into a north-pointing instrument.
In cooperation with Prof. Dr. Rellensmann, Wild Heerbrugg built the GAK1 as of 1963.
It is mounted on a bridge, which rests on the theodolite standard.
They were produced between 1963 and 1992 and there were different versions as shown above:
GAK1 / GAK2 / GAK11 - Gyro Attachmnent for theodolites (in slightly different versions)
ARK1 / ARK2- Gyro Aiming Circle (the Wild ARK1 is the combination of an angle measuring instrument (theodolite) with a gyro)
They give an orientation to ± 0.25 °/oo in approximately 20 minutes under almost all conditions (eg. at night or underground) unaffected by the earth's magnetic field.
